We have noted that there were problems in the church at Corinth, but these can be horrendously exaggerated and sometimes are. Corinth was a good church, and although many of the troubles were serious, they mostly affected a minority of people.
If we as a congregation love the gospel. Love the Bible, believe the same things, trivial and foolish things should never enter in or divide us. I don't say they do. We must not let trivial things divide, when we are so united in grace and in the gospel.
‘I beseech you, brethren’, says the apostle. Of course, it is a command of God through the inspired apostle, indeed, a command of Christ. The apostle is particularly aware that it is none other than Christ the Saviour who speaks to him in this command. The beseeching word is not meant to take away the authority of a command. He pleads with them because, while it is a command, they are dear to him, and on the whole they are sincere people. It will ruin them to continue in this way.
