He who boasts or glories in any sense, treasures something. This is what I value; this is my objective, my life plan.
What do you depend on? Acquisitions? Things you can possess and enjoy? This is what gives you satisfaction. Maybe it is power and fame, maybe in only your circle. I knew a man who worked in a field of science which was so narrow that he told me that when he published his work, only half a dozen in the world would be able to understand it, appreciate it. That kept him going. What keeps you going? Fame appearances? Nothing can survive the presence of God. Nothing will be allowed to come into his presence and boast before him, nothing will be allowed to get the credit. He alone will receive praise for all that has happened, all that is.
Therefore, if that is the true evaluation of everything – and it most certainly is – then let us even now value what is of real worth, and not glory in or regard as our treasure, things that will pass away. We lose nothing by giving glory to God, because he himself is the believer’s great reward. The more glorious our God is, the greater is our treasure in heaven. But we will not bring anything into heaven which we can take credit for. Even the rewards that believers are promised in the hereafter are gifts of his grace.
