‘Ye are enriched by him’, by Christ – the last person mentioned in the preceding verse. ‘Enriched’ is literally ‘made wealthy’.
It is wonderful to be with Christians. When we get speaking about the world, about the times, about Christ, about the word, and the future; what understanding God has given to us; what conversations we have. O you can have interesting conversations in the world. There are some people who are very knowledgeable. They can hold forth and tell you such interesting things. Yes, but it is all about the world. It is all about things that are here and now. They don't know anything about the soul, about human nature, about why things are as they are, and where we are going; about how to know God, to walk with him, tremendous things about Christ. Sometimes you are not in the company of an interesting person, even from a worldly standpoint, and the conversation can be so shallow, so poor. But not among Christians; we are enriched in all utterance. No light speech, no triviality.
O the blessing of being drawn to Christ from sin and condemnation. We are wealthy in spirit, having spirits brought to life so that we have union and communion with God. This is one of your principal characteristics and virtues. You are in touch with Almighty God, and he regards you and loves you, and you communicate with him. Why, what wealth is yours! People speak about their contacts and their connections in this life. ‘O this person has high connections.’ But we have the very highest imaginable connections. How much we owe to Christ for that!
And we are made so wealthy in terms of peace. ‘My conscience troubles me’, you say; of course it does. Conscience troubles, but then at the same time conscience has rest in Christ. All my sin is taken away because of his great love, because of what he has done consciously for a sinner like me. I have nothing to face. My sins are taken away, and I have peace in conscience.
I have such power. Don't you have power in Christ? You have got a new nature, and in spite of all our sinfulness we have so much more power than we ever had before. We have the facility of prayer, and we call upon him for help, and we are so rich in the help we receive, even since the experience of conversion. What experiences we have of joy, and light and understanding of great things which we never saw before. We now have a new view of the world, and we understand all things: why the world is as it is, and what will happen in the future. You could not pay for that. You could not buy 10 years of postgraduate education to give you the information and the insight which Christ has given you at conversion.
We are rich in prospects: we are heaven-bound; we are going into eternity. When we are old and dying, and all our powers fail and perish, then we have eternal riches. Earthly money will not matter at that time, even to the wealthiest person, because it cannot be enjoyed anymore. But how rich is the Christian, going into paradise and into eternal glory. We are rich in happiness, because we have the love of Christ.
