Some will read this today and will immediately think of the gift of tongues, prophecy, and revelation. Well, they are included because the church at Corinth had gifted tongue speakers; they were still around, at this time.
The gifts that Christian people have are love for Christ, light and understanding of the gospel, a lively conscience – what a gift, that speaks day by day – assurance of salvation, compassion for the lost, compassion for those in trouble or distress. The gift of knowing that you belong to each other, and that you are related in the same spiritual family. The Corinthians came behind in none of these indications of Christian grace.
How can you tell a Christian? Well, among other things, the perspective has changed for the Christian believer. Before we were saved it this world, and our lot, and how we would get on; but now we love the Lord, and we have a different outlook. Before, I was concerned about the present; now I am concerned not only about the present, but the eternal future. Before, I was interested only in material things; now I am chiefly interested in spiritual things, and the service of the Lord. Before I focused on myself; now, I hope, I focus on the Lord, and his calls and his things.
