The same word ‘confirm’ was used in verse six, ‘even as the testimony of Christ was confirmed in you.’ Again, it is foundation you, establish you, unto the end.
If you are truly saved, Christ will keep you. Even should you backslide – and God forbid that anyone should encourage that – he will bring us back if we are truly saved, perhaps by hard discipline. Should you wander from the pathway he will bring you back in his kindness, even if he has to discipline you in some way. He will bring you back to trusting in him.
Sometimes people say, ‘Will I as a Christian stand in judgement with all my sins before me? I know I shall be forgiven, and Christ will answer for me. But is it true that even as a Christian all my sin has got to be laid bare, and I shall be deeply ashamed, and I shall be crushed, even in the day of glory, even though I will be forgiven and cleansed?’ No, dear friends; no. ‘Blameless’, not charged, not accused. The child of God will never be put to shame. Unashamed in that great day. Will I see my sin at all? O yes; when that day comes, you will see your indebtedness to Christ, somehow, but not to crush you, not so that we look at each other and say, ‘O I didn't know he did this, and she did that.’ We will not have anybody else in mind but ourselves. In that final day we shall be very aware how much we owe to Jesus Christ, our Lord and Saviour, but it will be such an experience as will only deepen beyond measure our gratitude and love to him, as we fully understand just how much he suffered and did for us. It will not be shame. We will be unaccused, blameless in that final great day.
