Paul returns to the principles he used when handling the freedom heresy. Three things always have to be considered when we evaluate anything.
Think how many things are open to us. Will this thing I am considering take away my money, my stewardship to the Lord? Am I pampering myself? Will I weaken myself so I always give in to these pursuits? That would be harmful to us because we need every ounce of strength we have. If we weaken ourselves in one area we may make ourselves vulnerable to temptation. Will it mean I pander to my ego? Some people have great abilities in the area of sport, but they keep it up to excel among their peers. Others want a marvellous appliance because it will make them to stand out as special. It is difficult to work this out, because we do not want uniformity among Christians. There is scope for variety among God’s people, and different people will come to different understandings of what is keeping good faith with the Lord. Besides which, it is important that people should have scope to go wrong, for it is the Christian life is supposed to be voluntary. We are therefore careful that one person does not jump on another whenever they are perceived to have crossed somebody’s line. We are gentle with the things we see. We dare not look down our noses at each other.
