The Lord’s Supper will be kept all the way until the coming of the Lord. It is an ordinance commanded by Christ for the entire gospel age: the eating of the symbolic bread and the drinking of the symbolic cup. ‘Ye do show’ – I confess I prefer the translation of the modern translations which does justice to the Greek there: ‘Ye do show’ – the Greek word is, ye do proclaim. Every time you take the bread and the wine you proclaim something. It is a symbolic occasion which is like a sermon. ‘Ye do show [or proclaim] the Lord's death till he come.’ The Lord’s Supper looks forward to the coming of Christ in his glorified form. Then we will cease to observe it because it will have reached its fulfilment. His eternal kingdom will have been made visible. The Lord's Supper keeps the Lord's death before us in our minds and in our hearts, constantly, regularly. Our hearts melt; we confess our sin; we marvel at what he did for us; we remember we have ingested him and he is living within us. We yield ourselves afresh entirely to him.
