1 Corinthians 11:27

Let him not eat or drink unworthily – that means to say, like the Corinthians were, confusing it with a love feast; concerned about what they were going to eat, more than the Lord’s Supper. That is why we keep the Lord’s Supper to simple symbols, so that it is not the eating that our minds are on, but what the eating represents – the Lord, his body and blood, and his atonement.
Application
They were insincere when they came to the Lord’s Supper. Are we? Are we thanking him, taking, remembering, and reflecting on the great blessing implied in this ordinance? We must examine ourselves and consider what this means.
Some people do not come at all, and they are Christians, and they love the Lord. If you stay outside, you are in exactly the same category as those who eat and drink unworthily, with their minds not on it, without sincere hearts. To not participate is even worse than that. This is of such concern to the Lord, and this is so important to us, that we must be in and we must be sincere. That is what the apostle means, otherwise there may be a discipline for us.
