He repeats the point, by appealing to their sensitivities. ‘Don’t you understand?’ he says to the women. ‘You wouldn’t want to be shorn or shaven. You instinctively know that that would be shameful, because your hair is something of beauty given by God to adorn your head. Even you can see this.’ These things matter. Issues of culture cannot just to be ignored. Christians are part of society too, and how they behave in society is watched closely by the non-Christian world and is part of their testimony. Christians are not revolutionaries who invent a totally new form of behaviour or of dress that the world has never seen before. They have a certain respect for culture because their respect for culture sends a message to those outside the church. The message that they want to promote is vastly mor important than a message about dress: it is the message of the grace of God in Christ and the free forgiveness that all may have who come to him. ‘If then you know that shaving your head would be a disgrace, then understand also that this is the effect you are having by being unveiled in your society – it is a shock, and it has a message to it, and you must understand that.’
