That is very interesting. He is the image and the glory of God; which means to say, it falls to the man particularly to reflect what is special about human beings. We are not animals. The man is to unadorned to show that he has reason, he has kindness, he has understanding, he is approachable. All these glorious things about human beings that are so different from the animals – he reflects the very attributes of God. So does the woman, of course. But the man must not cover-up, because his facial expressions, his intelligence, his perception, his understanding, everything that is visible in the face must be displayed. It falls to him to display those things. It falls to the woman, if she is a wife, to be retiring and to be modest. And the language that proclaimed these things and expressed them in those days was the wearing of a veil. So this was so important, and the apostle makes it clear. ‘For a man indeed ought not to cover his head, forasmuch as he is the image and glory of God: but the woman is the glory of the man.’ To her falls modesty and retirement. It is a matter of roles distinguished by the sexes.
