Is it true that by saying this the ear can extract itself from the body and no longer be part of it? Of course not. I think there is more envy here.
You can imagine: somebody has a very important role among God’s people in comforting others and being a blessing to others, suddenly wants to be an overseer, a shepherd and officer. There is no room for envy and jealousy. The apostle will say, ‘We have got our role, our gift, our place in the church by God’s design. It is he who equips and appoints us to different things. It is God who fashions the body, and who fashions every individual local church. So the complaining ear, who wants to be something else; and because he can’t be something else he is discontented and doesn’t feel he is worthwhile or part of the body. Well, that is a great shame.
