The noble eye, looking down, cannot say, ‘I have no need of thee.’ Even the eye, which the ear might tend to envy, is not so great that it can exist on its own.
We need preachers, yes; but we need those who pray. Not only members praying, but some people who have an unusual gift of prayer, and can maintain prayer and concentration at great length in the privacy of their homes perhaps, and can plead for the work of God. Every church needs not only every member at prayer, but some people who are particularly gifted praying souls. You will never see it, and you will never know it; and they will not say what they do, and yet they are the inner strength of the church. We have among us some people whose gift is very inconspicuous, but it is probably the most important of all – those who pray.
We also need shepherds – people who notice, and care, and get alongside others. And we need burden bearers. We need teachers, lots of them, for the children and for the youth, and we need those who visit the community. We need some discerners, who read the times, and give us warning, and we need no end of practical people. So there are so many gifts in a church.
