1 Corinthians 12:25

Comments

God has designed the body so that every member is a helper of every other member. No member is ever against another member. They are work together to the utmost of their ability so that no member is lost. In the body of Christ there are no detached persons, no self-sufficiency, no lack of appreciation and dependence; ‘but that the members should have the same care one for another’. The first thing about the body is that it is a working unit. We are here to serve the Lord; and our different abilities and capacities are for Christ, for the gospel, for service, and for witness. But the second thing is that such a wonderful mechanism needs care. You do not live primarily to eat – yes, some people do. But most do not live primarily just to eat and keep warm and pamper the body. Hopefully your life has purpose: with your husband, your wife, your family, your work, your place in the world, and most importantly in the church.

Application

If you have to write out a list of priorities, what is important to you? Hopefully if you are a true person, your main objectives are not just eating and sleeping and care of the home, necessary as they are. These things are lower objectives for you. So it is in the church. The great calling of a Christian is to serve Christ in the church, this great body or unit – winning souls, and performing things to the glory of God. And secondarily, of course, the body does need its care, its food, and its attention; and when it gets sick it needs its special care. That is mentioned here in this verse, ‘that there should be no schism in the body, but that the members should have the same care one for another’. Care is a precious word. It is a strong word in the Greek. It means feelingful care, anxious care.
