Then the great conclusion: ‘And now’ – that is, in heaven; not right now, but he says ‘now’ because heaven is his current subject – ‘abideth faith, hope, charity, these three.’ Will faith survive into eternity? Faith and hope in heaven? Elsewhere the apostle almost says that faith and hope end at death.
Can we not cultivate love now? Husbands, wives: it is so easy to cultivate love. Pray for love; mortify selfishness, beat it down; give thanks for your husband, your wife, your fellow Christians. Look forward to heaven, when love will be all in all. Let it be formed in us increasingly. Never hinder it. Don’t let Satan take it away from you, by gossip or unworthy things. Love is for ever.
In the words of Henry Francis Lyte, ‘Soon shall close my earthly mission. Swift shall pass my pilgrim days. Hope soon change to gland fruition, faith to sight, and prayer to praise.’ That will happen, and there isn’t long. There isn’t long to develop true giving love, to fix your mind and heart on the people whom you teach, the children to whom you speak, the family you rear, the husband that God gave you, the wife God gave you. There isn't long to deepen and perfect your love, because love is the great ruling empowering motive, and it will last for all eternity.
