Christ will reign, and though he could by sheer power bring about the subjection of all things instantly, he chooses to work over time and through his people, and eventually all enemies will be subject to him (verse 25). This includes death itself, for death too is to be regarded as an enemy (verse 26).
What a difference this makes to eternity. His work is done. It will never need to be repeated. When we die we will go into the paradise of Christ. But with our resurrection bodies in the new heaven and in the new earth, we shall have spiritual capacities, which we can only dream of now, in which we shall comprehend the Father. I do not say we shall see the Father because we just do not know about that, but we shall comprehend him and spiritually behold and appreciate him, so that we marvel at him. And we shall see Christ; we shall literally see him. He will continue to wear in glorified form that human body, which he assumed while on earth for us, ‘that God may be all in all.’ Remember those simple words of the cricketer, the missionary to China, C T Studd, who died in 1931. ‘Only one life; ’twill soon be past, Only what’s done for Christ will last.’ You serve him, and the things you do for him will be cherished for ever in the glorious eternity.
You and I, if we are born again by the Spirit of God, if we have truly come to Christ, will be handed over to the whole Godhead by Christ, as trophies, as part of his finished work, his accomplished victory. Christ will be able to point to us and say, ‘See my handiwork in him and in her.’ He will be able to say of all the redeemed people, ‘Here are the redeemed. They are prepared to occupy heaven for all eternity and they know something very well. They know what they would never have known if there had been no fall, if there had never been sin. They know that there is no alternative to God. They know that, if it were possible, as soon as they were to turn away from God, anti-values would come in: sin, rebellion, unbelief, and disobedience. That is the triumph of that final day.
