It must happen. The apostle seems to speak about himself. It is clearer in the original. He seems now to be referring to his own body, and all of us, of course. ‘This corruptible must put on incorruption.’ This body of mine [you can imagine the apostle Paul saying it], worn out, whipped many times, beaten and scarred for the sake of Christ and for the sake of the gospel; trudging wearily, miles and miles, great distances; never pausing, never stopping. Here is this aching, worn out body of the apostle. He has some years to go yet; he is not at the very end of his journey, but in many ways he is like an old man. And yet he says in this 53rd verse, ‘this corruptible’, this wearing, earthly body, ‘must put on incorruption’. In a split-second it will be transformed, never to deteriorate; so wonderful, so glorious, so powerful.
Application
How much fear mortality puts into the hearts of men and women. Hebrews speaks of us all as being those ‘who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage’ (Hebrews 2:15). When Christ rose from the dead, he did not receive a mortal body again. Death was behind him forever. ‘Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more; death hath no more dominion over him’ (Romans 6:9). What liberty the saint will know when they receive bodies which they understand intuitively can never die again. Christ gives life to soul and body, and that life will never be taken away again.
