We should be totally accountable says the apostle. He is effectively saying, I won't personally touch it; it will be all so above board, that nobody will be able to suggest anything maliciously, falsely, about an apostle and his connection with stewardship. Whoever you appoint will carry the substance. If I go with them, fine, but it will be completely above board, and not possible for any wrong suggestions to be made. Paul has not yet decided whether he will go up to Jerusalem, but if he does, it is they who will accompany him as the apostle of the Lord. Nevertheless it is they who will bear the gift and have charge of it.
Application
That is how it ought to be. That is why the minister should never be involved even in the signing of the church cheques. That is why there has to be a treasurer appointed among the officers by the people. Everything must be visible and transparent, and above board and properly done.
These first three verses are practical, and again we draw attention to the love aspect. Stewardship should be a matter of love. Do we give out of love for the Lord? Do we give out of love for the people we hope who will benefit by the hearing of the gospel, or the aid to needy people?
