Who knows what is going on in the mind of another person? Nobody. We cannot read each other’s thoughts.
This gives us a much closer fellowship with God than is possible with other human beings. As we take God’s word up daily, we must pray to God for understanding by the Spirit. Do not proudly think you can understand it by yourself. Be dependent upon him and pray for help, and God will teach you deep things.
Human beings exercise faith every day; they exercise faith in the existence of other minds. No one has ever seen another mind directly, and yet, because we have minds and experience thoughts, we assume that other people have minds also. This act of faith, which is prepared to treat other human beings as sentient, conscious beings, shows that even the rank materialist must live by a degree of faith to avoid total isolation.
