1 Corinthians 3:11 Commentary and Bible Study

The foundation is Christ, and the gospel of Christ, so Christ has provided the foundation for his church. It is himself, his incarnation, his suffering and death for sinners, his substitutionary atonement, his resurrection and ascension. It is the message of the gospel: repentance and faith in Christ, and new life given, and a new Spirit put within you. That's the foundation. Now some people build on this foundation, but they haven't taken care how they build, and instead of building a fine building of precious stones. ‘Precious stones’ here does not refer to gems; it refers to precious slabs of marble, different kinds of marble and granite and worthy strong valuable stonework to lay on the foundation.
