1 Corinthians 3:18

Paul is still dealing with the fault in the church in Corinth which he first identified in 1 Corinthians 1:12. He has shown the nature of the deception involved. It is a foolish appreciation of human wisdom, which comes from paying too much attention to how things appear to the carnal mind. It is a sense of shame arising out of an embarrassment that should not be there. Why are the Corinthians so worried about how they appear and how their preachers appear in the eyes of the unconverted? Because part of them is still seeking the praise of men. If they consider that to be wisdom – which it is most definitely not – then let them become fools. If they have so adopted the evaluation of the world in assessing preachers and their message, then let them deliberately embrace what they consider to be foolishness, and glory once again in the cross of Christ. That will be their cure. That will teach them that their judgment had become clouded, and they had mistaken for power something which in fact is entirely void of true power. ‘Jettison all of that admiration of men and their oratory, and humble yourself’, says Paul.
Application
Does a preacher notice that there are certain subjects connected with the gospel which he has begun to avoid? He is worried about putting people off with content that he knows they will despise as too much reliant on the supernatural, as requiring too great a change in the human heart, as avoiding the cross, the heart of the message. Then let his pray that God removes his foolishness and return to those subjects again. Of course the message must be well reasoned and interesting, but the preacher must honour God’s message and not obstruct the Spirit’s work.
