What a privilege ministers have. Why doesn't God do all the work himself? Why doesn't the Spirit just move, so that people have light and are saved? God chooses to use his people, but it should not go to their heads. The power is that of God. The work in the heart is by the Spirit of God, and we are labourers with the mighty God, but that is all we are: labourers, doing the work he has given us, in the way he has given us to do it. He is the one that counts. See the sense of this verse. Let us put a word in to help get the sense: ‘For we are mere labourers, together with Almighty God’ We are not on the level with him. Do not say, ‘We are labourers with him. Oh, we must be on the same level as God!’ No, you read it wrongly. We are mere labourers, but privileged to be working for the mighty God. That is the sense. ‘Ye are God’s husbandry’; we would say God's farm today. Your margin says, God's tillage, God's field.
