Here are the details. Of course they were not fools. There were dispensers of God's wisdom, but in the world's eyes they were seen as fools, because of what they preached. ‘We are fools for Christ’s sake,’ says Paul, ‘but ye are wise in Christ.’ You want people in the world to respect you, at least many of you do. You want preachers who are just like Greek orators. You want to be seen to be wise, not fools for Christ’s sake. ‘We are weak,’ says Paul, ‘but ye are strong. Ye are honourable, but we are despised.’ O, those Christians with their simple gospel message – the depravity of man, God sending a Saviour, substitutionary atonement, the need of conversion through repentance – what a foolish message. But you on the other hand are wise in Christ. What a difference between the lifestyle of the apostles and the lifestyle of the wise, rich Corinthians, sliding back to their pre-conversion values. And we have to make sure we do not do the same.
Application
There have been a lot of preachers, even some good men, down the years who did not like being called fools by the world, and when the world turned on them and said, ‘You fool. You preach about a Saviour who died; you say terrible things; God heaping out punishments upon his eternal Son.’ In the world's eyes that is all foolish and horrible, and so those preachers sometimes change their message, and soften it, because they simply cannot bear not having the respect of the world.
