Comments
The responsibilities of a steward are such that an essential qualification for the task is faithfulness, or trustworthiness. He will often have to operate when his master is not present, and he must continue to have his master’s interests at heart. His master needs to be able to trust him to enough to leave his own affairs in the hands of his steward and know that he will not be taken advantage of. He must stick to the task, and not go beyond it. He must not change his commission, and he is not out for himself. The steward is not required to be brilliant, or clever, or original, but to be faithful to the Lord and to continue doing what he has commanded us to do.
Application
The steward of the mysteries of God has received a commission from the Lord. He will have to give an account of his stewardship at the end of his life. If he is a faithful steward he will take great care what he does and hope to receive the commendation at the end, ‘Well done, thou good and faithful servant … enter thou into the joy of thy lord’ (Matthew 25:21).
