It is likely that this was a common saying among people in society in general in those days. ‘Know ye not that of little leaven leaveneth the whole lump?’ The apostle Paul uses the same illustration elsewhere. The Lord Jesus Christ does not use it, but refers to it. There are a number of Scriptures which refer to this. A little yeast causes the whole loaf to rise, and sin also spreads throughout the body, says the apostle Paul. The spread he has in mind is spreading not through an individual but through all the members of the whole church. In their case, there is the sin of pride in Corinth; there is the sin of leaving a serious sin undealt with; there is the sin of hypocrisy. ‘Know you not that a little leaven leaveneth the whole lump.’
Application
Sin spreads so quickly by example; wrong attitudes spread so easily. Sin is all the time trying to get entrance into our lives, into the churches. We observe one another, and we copy one another, and often we set our standards based on what we see in one another. We should obtain our standards from the word of God, but we may not do that as we should. It takes resolve to be different from others, and to hold onto a standard when others around us are not doing so. Our conversation communicates what we think is important and this also can be used by the devil to spread sin among us.
