The first two are related to each other. Stealing – you take it; covetousness – you buy it; but it is exactly the same. You want more, you have got to have, and you have got to gratify your lust. It is a wholly avoidable sin for Christians, to be hooked on more and more, to show off, to look good, to have more than others. Then ‘nor drunkards’ – a most selfish conduct for Christian people. It is a terrible thing to have been delivered from this power, and then to go back to it or slip into it. It is wholly avoidable, so hate it.‘Nor revilers’ – people who are malicious, gossips; trying to tear down and ruin others. ‘Nor extortioners’ – those who steal under pretence of right or power. Maybe you have got a landlord, and his tenants have got nowhere to go. It would happen in the ancient world, as now. He takes advantage and he charges twice the rent which is reasonable or right for that property, because he is in a position of power. It is a form of violence, because he knows they have got no alternative. That would be extortion. It is by some improper means getting more than you are entitled to. Such people, if unrepentant, shall not inherit the kingdom of God. The fruit of the Spirit must be seen in a believer, and the deeds of the old nature must be put to death consistently.
