How close our bond with the Lord is! The marriage bond is a picture of this bond with the Lord but in a different realm. ‘This is a great mystery:’, says the apostle, ‘but I speak concerning Christ and the church’ (Ephesians 5:32). We are even now one with the Lord because he sent his Spirit to dwell in our hearts, and we have the mind of Christ, and have access to his thoughts through his word illuminated by his Spirit. The oneness with the Lord starts at conversion, but unlike the union with a spouse on earth it never ends. Even while we live out our lives, we belong to him body and soul. He has created marriage on earth for our good, but he sets the bounds of what are proper physical relations between human beings. Again, in context, the application of this is that fornication is utterly unthinkable for a Christian.
