‘Is the matter too complex for you to judge?’ he in effect asks. Of course not. Are they unaware that the saints will even judge angels? The Lord Jesus Christ is recorded in the Gospels as having said to his disciples that they would be with him in judgment (Matthew 19:38), and they would judge; but obviously not the twelve disciples alone, for in this they represent all true believers (Matthew 12:41-42). We are all going to be involved in judgment. The saints will participate in the evaluation of the motives and decisions of angels, who belong to a realm that is now so mysterious to us. God will give the saints this responsibility, and is the church at Corinth going to manifest a false modesty that claims that to judge earthly matters, matters that pertain to this life, is beyond their capability? This self-deprecation is not sincere and it is a serious fault.Presumably it is the fallen angels that the saint will judge, the demons of darkness. They too will be judged on the Day of Judgment and we shall be there with the Lord, all believers at the shoulder of the Lord, when he judges them. We shall find ourselves in total agreement with every sentence that he hands out. Our minds will be enhanced to understand with sinfulness of sin, and to see how terrible was the rebellion of the devil and his angels and to fix an appropriate eternal punishment on them. Thus God will give his people the victory over their great enemy, and turn the tables so that in spite of their superior power to us in this life, once glorified, we will be fit for such a task. That is our station. Some people go further and think that this hints at the fact that we will be given a higher station, even than the good angels. In that sense, we will not judge them, but it is a way of saying, we shall be of greater significance, even than they are. That could also be so.
Application
Questions
To what extent will the saints act as judges? Well, obviously, Christ is the judge, not us. He is the one who will judge. But when he comes again at the very end of time, and there is the general resurrection and Christ’s people are all with him, then we shall affirm everything he does. Because we are in him and we are his children, we share as it were his majesty and his reign and his judgement. We are taken out of the judgment process, because we are under the blood of Christ, saved through his atoning death. We affirm and praise and stand with him in all that he does.
