Pauls seems to give this rule in answer to a specific question which the Corinthians have asked, although it is a question which would naturally arise in a situation where people are being converted out of a pagan background at all stages of life. ‘Is it right for a believer to remain married to an unbeliever?’ Some were called to salvation when they were already married. Did their conversion mean that they should no longer live with an unconverted spouse? Was there some corrupting influence that would affect them from being in so close a union with an unbeliever? No. The apostle is inspired, remember, in all he writes. Even if the spouse is a pagan, God will give grace. The marriage bond is all-important, and not easily broken. So there is the greatest importance in preserving the bond if it is possible to do so.
