But then we come on to servants and slaves. The word ‘servant’ translates a word which is quite a broad word, which essentially means ‘slave’, although bondservant or even paid servant can be included in the term in the way in which it is used.
Look at the higher freedom. I may be a slave, but look at the higher freedom that I enjoy: free from condemnation and death, never to perish and be condemned before God, free from the inevitable dominion of sin. I can cry out to God and be strengthened and enabled to defeat sin. It is no longer inevitable that sin will have mastery in my life. I am free to approach God in the name of Jesus Christ, the only Saviour, free from ignorance and unbelief that used to dominate me, free, for those who were converted from the Jews, from the burden of the ceremonial law.
