Paul virtually repeats the exhortation in verse 20, but adds the words ‘with God’. He has shown that in all cases the most important part of our situation is our relation to God. The slave, though in bondage to an earthly oppressive institution, is the Lord’s freedman; and the freedman is the Lord’s slave. In all cases the essence of our situation and the aspect of it that will bring us the greatest spiritual profit is our relationship with the Lord. This redefinition of every human station in life is the secret of how to live, and this truth of the Lord being with us enables us to bear the hardest of burdens in life. We do not expect justice from this world, although if we can obtain it we are thankful, but every injustice will be resolved when we are with Christ. Then he will reveal to us what he was working in us and how what was ordained was to our advantage, even though it seemed otherwise at the time. It is the person who believes that this life is all there is who is unable to bear hardship, for he thinks he has lost all. Patient for Christ’s sake acceptance of what we cannot change will bring great gain.
