The time is short. The apostle is probably referring to the coming of Christ. He knew the time was quite a way off in his day. He is talking about our lifetimes. For every one of us, the time is short; we have not got long. Are you saved at twenty? You might live till you are eighty. That is not long, and for us in these last days, the Lord most certainly may come. Are you saved at forty? You have not got long. ‘It remaineth that both they that have wives be as though they had none.’ He is not saying, neglect your wife. He would contradict himself to say that. No, it means, do not be so committed and devoted that you do nothing for the Lord. So order your affairs, that you do the fullest justice to your wife, your husband, your family, and yet you do not waste time; you still remember you are a bondservant of Christ. So in that sense, they that have wives and husbands should be as though they had none.
