Can you not serve the Lord if you are married? Why then do ministers marry? Many ministers need a wife because they are not sufficient by themselves. Marriage has tremendous benefits for service. It is, as Luther said, a school for character. It provides advantages for hospitality. It uniquely combines the gifts of two individual people into a new unit for the Lord. Single men have different and better advantages still. They are those who are called not to be married by circumstances, or by inclination. They unique freedom for unusual degree of service. They are better able to take risks for the Lord, for they do not have to consider what might happen to a wife who is left behind.
In first world war many young men died, therefore many young women never married. These unmarried ladies were the strength of this country. They were the backbone of the health service; they provided many of the teachers in schools, and the help provide a caring moral land.
In 18th century Great Awakening many of the preachers did best work before they were married!
