Paul was either a bachelor or a widower; probably a bachelor. Why does he want all people to be as himself? He is comforting those who are single and showing the benefits, in particular for itinerant preachers. He is shattering notions that everyone must marry. Each one has his proper gifts from God. Paul has the gift not to be tempted and under no strain as an unmarried man. Christ teaches exactly the same: ‘For there are eunuchs, that were so born from their mother's womb: and there are eunuchs, that were made eunuchs by men: and there are eunuchs, that made themselves eunuchs for the kingdom of heaven's sake. He that is able to receive it, let him receive it’ (Matthew 19:12). Christ tells the disciples, that if they are able to remain single, they should. Paul is one who has made himself a eunuch for the kingdom of heaven’s sake. He will go on to explain the advantages that he has as an unmarried man, and he wants others to have these same advantages. This is why his preference is for all men to be as he is; it is an advantage for the advance of the kingdom of heaven. It may be the balance of advantages and disadvantages may have shifted over the years. As time has gone on, life has become much easier. Marriage doesn’t demand so much time today that we cannot participate in the Lord’s work if we are married.
