‘If others be partakers of this power over you?’ That means that the Corinthians already understood this principle; they already were supporting workers. Paul had founded the church six years previously, and in the meantime the Corinthians had supported ministers and evangelists.
But he also did it for the sake of posterity. Sometimes you tune into television, and there is a programme about Christianity or about faith. These days it is usually in some ways trying to tear apart the Bible or tear apart the Christian faith, and they will often be against the apostle Paul. One of the things that these theological liberals, who attack Christianity, often say is that the kind of thing that is preached in the churches was invented by Paul. So they try to drive a wedge between Christ and Paul. ‘O Christ was so lovely, and he had a lovely religion. And then along came the apostle Paul, and he added to it things like repentance, and hell, and all kinds of threats.’ But of course it is complete nonsense. Paul taught nothing that Jesus Christ did not teach. But they try in these cunning ways to bring people to doubt, and to tear the faith apart. What would you think if they could also say, ‘This Christian faith so-called was an invention of Paul, who did it for money’? No, the apostle Paul was called by God to voluntarily work for his own living, so that nobody could discredit him on this account.
