Worst still, if we say that we have no sin that needs to be confessed, we argue with God and in effect call him a liar, for he who cannot be mistaken has testified against our sin in the most conclusive manner both in his law and in our consciences, and he has provided a Saviour to deliver us at terrible cost to himself. John puts it this way to shock us; those who try to come to God without confession are trying to bring the darkness with them.If we make God a liar in the matter of our sin then certainly we do not trust him in anything, and of course his word is not in us, for who would allow the word of one he considered a liar to have entrance into his heart, and give it freedom to visit every room in the house? Just as his truth is not in us, so his word is not in us, and indeed it is impossible that his truth could be in us, for we can only receive it through his word.
