1 John 1:3 Commentary and Bible Study

Believers today may have the same fellowship with God that the apostles had. That fellowship is only possible through the manifestation of a person, the Word of life, for God reveals himself to his people only through Christ. This fellowship will be our eternal occupation as God opens himself to us and we explore the mind of Christ to the fullest extent we are capable of. John writes this letter to promote the believer’s fellowship with God the Father, and God the Son. The setting down of these truths in writing is essential for their preservation for all future generations of believers.All that John says about Jesus Christ at the start of his letter prepares the way for what he says later. He is speaking of one who is divine, eternal, holy and true, and therefore it is impossible that we should confess him to be the Christ and yet be selective about which of his doctrines we will receive, or which of his commandments we will obey. If he is the embodiment of truth then all that he says is true and must be received; we cannot deny his miracles, nor doubt his bodily resurrection, nor question his second coming at the end of the world; we are committed to a supernatural view of his person.
