1 John 1:5
Comments
John expresses the same truth both positively and negatively in order to set up the strongest possible contrast. God has revealed himself to this world of darkness chiefly through the person of Jesus Christ. The terms of fellowship with God are defined by his nature. God is light – truth, holiness, purity – and cannot have fellowship with any who are of a different nature to himself. There remains a deep separation between light and darkness, and only those who belong to the light and have turned away from darkness, and are being transformed into the likeness of Christ, can have fellowship with God. Our God is utterly holy and cannot do evil; he is unaffected by the corruption that is in the world; he will never allow his perfect character to be defiled by the darkness of sin. The first word of the gospel is therefore ‘repent’.
Application
It is a cause of great wonder to Christians that God, who is so different to them, both desires to have fellowship with them and has found a way to do so which does not compromise his perfection.
