1 John 1:6
Comments
John begins with the first of six claims (with one more in chapter 4). Some of these are claims which should be made, but which the claimant has no right to make; others are claims which contradict the truth and should not be made at all. To have fellowship with God is good, but to claim this and yet to walk in darkness and to practice wickedness is not simply to be mistaken, but to lie, since this claim is made by those who know God is light and yet who know they still love darkness, and who therefore cannot pretend that they have fellowship with God without denying what they know.
Application
We see immediately that this is a letter of warning. The believer is born again into a spiritual war zone. The powers of darkness are not idle, but begin their assault the moment a person turns to the Lord and through temptation constantly try to draw us back into sin. John is aware that some have not truly repented and never really left the darkness despite their claims. Our conduct verifies our claims.
John’s zeal for the truth does not allow him to be indifferent to error. Those who claim to love God and yet do not defend his word, or claim that it is unloving to criticise false doctrine or false practice, show that they do not truly know the Lord.
