What an amazing conjunction of truths we find in this verse, but one which is true to the contrasting aspects of the Christian life. On the one hand it insists that we make God’s perfection our only standard and accept no lesser standard, but on the other hand it recognises that while we are in the body we constantly fail to attain to that standard. This tension is the reality of the Christian life, and those who try to be rid of it by abandoning either of these truths are in danger of making shipwreck of their faith.The fellowship of the saints with one another is fellowship that comes from having the same God and Saviour, a common salvation, and a shared hope and eternal prospects: it is Christ who unites us as members of one body. It is because we have fellowship with God that fellowship with one another is possible. This blessing is not just for mature believers but should be enjoyed by all God’s children, and comes to us through the one who lived on earth but who was both the Son of God and the promised Christ.
Application
Our Heavenly Father knows how to bring sinners to heaven, therefore let none avoid turning to Christ out of fear that he will not be able to complete the work he has begun.
There is no other provision for sin than the blood of Christ and at no point does the believer cease to need it. God is in the process of bringing sinners to heaven. It is his will that although we are justified in a moment, our sanctification is not complete until death, and sin continues to harass us to the end. There must therefore be a remedy for sin along the way, even for believers, and this God has provided, because the blood of Christ not only washed us clean at the start of our Christian lives, but remains the only means by which daily sin can be washed away.
