Here is another claim, but this is one which should not be made and marks the one who makes it as a phoney. The Bible nowhere teaches perfectionism. If any are inclined to claim this in their case, and question John’s insistence on the need for the blood of Christ to cleanse them, he answers that they are self-deceived and the truth has never found a home in their hearts. This applies whether we claim we have never been sinners, or that we have advanced to a sinless state as believers. God speaks through the conscience of every man and woman, and we can only claim to be without sin if we deny the testimony of conscience.The truth referred to here is all that God has revealed to us through Jesus Christ his Son, including his person, his work, and all his doctrine.
Application
Questions
How is self-deception possible for no one knows better than we do what we know? It is possible only by prolonged and repeated lying to ourselves, which eventually results in a person coming to believe their own lie, even though they once knew it was false. In verse 6 the one in error has lied to himself; but in this verse he has gone further and succeeded in deceiving himself.
