Happy is the one who shows the family instinct and loves his fellow believer, whoever he be, just because he sees Christ in him; this spiritual bond surpasses all natural affinities. Brotherly love safeguards those who express it because it ensures that they remain in the light. Stumbling blocks which might arise in us and cause us to fall because of pride, anger, jealousy, malice, or uncleanness are avoided by love, which teaches us to do the opposite of all these.
Application
Love fulfils the law, for it has a wisdom of its own that knows how to respond to every situation and its response will always be in conformity with the law of God. Because love is so skilled at responding in the right way, it does not need to know every situation in advance and consider beforehand in detail how it will behave, but it consults itself and applies a very simple rule to discover right conduct.
Love is honest and is able to do the hardest things if that is where it sees the path of duty to lie; it does not dissemble and justify a lesser response in order to save itself.
Love abides in the light and fears to depart from it, so it is constantly testing itself to see if what it does is consistent with the light.
