1 John 2:14
Comments
John now repeats what he had said before but, according to his style, adds further thoughts which build on what he has already taught. We repeat ourselves for the sake of emphasis, to help others remember, and to reassure them of some truth which they might be inclined to doubt. The apostle’s words may be repeated for these and other reasons. He has no fear of being dismissed as simplistic, for he knows the great importance of what he says.
Application
The Christian must indeed be strong to overcome formidable enemies. He certainly does not look strong in the eyes of men, but there is in him a strength through faith which enables him to overcome temptation, persecution, discouragement, rejection, and false accusation which some, who appear stronger than him, are not able to withstand. He learns to take responsibility, to serve in God’s house, and to consider duty.
Questions
Why does John change from the present tense to the past tense in this verse? Some suggest he does this because he looks forward to the time when he will no longer be in the world and only his letter will remain with them; they must consider this letter as the faith once delivered to the saints.
