In contrast to those who went out from them, manifesting the spirit of antichrist, God’s true children have great stability and nothing can separate them from the truth. What keeps them safe is the anointing of the Spirit of God who is poured out on them like the oil with which Hebrew prophets, priests, and kings were anointed. John’s readers were anointed at the new birth and the Spirit gave them understanding direct from God which confirmed the truth of Scripture in a way which no amount of study or human argument could do. John is therefore confident that they will not be led astray for the truth in their hearts acts as a guardian to prevent error entering.
Application
Questions
How can John say they know all things? Does this mean that they have nothing more to learn? No, but it means that the seed of knowledge given at the start has the potential to grow into perfect knowledge and that there is enough in that anointing to guard against all possible forms of error.
Does John mean that this anointing of the Spirit makes the Scripture redundant? No, all authoritative truth comes through the Bible and the Spirit never bypasses his own inspired word. What he does do however is to give us understanding of Scripture and seal its testimony to our hearts.
