Believers need to be sifted by the word, and John’s strong warnings and exhortations do not imply that he thinks he is writing to unbelievers. He writes because he is sure they have the truth within them, and therefore they are safe because of the nature of the truth. When God’s truth enters the heart, it leaves no part of it unaffected. It sifts and challenges all that it finds, changing what it does not agree with. It is like a conqueror’s foothold in enemy territory which eventually leads to complete subjugation of the entire territory. The truth cannot coexist with a lie, therefore the anointing they have received will defend them against all error. Like the immune system with its amazing ability to distinguish friend from foe, the truth can identify error whatever new form it dares to invent.
