The person of Christ is the touchstone of truth, and the essence of antichrist’s lie is to deny that the Father has sent his Son into the world to take human nature, so that he is truly God and truly man. To deny this is to deny that he made atonement for our sins by his death on the cross. There are many lies in the world, but this lie is both the most serious and most characteristic of the father of lies, the devil, who inspires antichrist. It is a lie because even the demons know who Jesus of Nazareth is (Luke 4:34). To deny that Jesus is the Christ is to deny who the Son is, for it has ever been at the centre of God’s plan that the Son of God should become the Son of Man. No one can deny the Son without denying the Father also, because the Father sent the Son into the world as the greatest expression of his mercy and love, and because the Father can only be known through the Son.
Application
To deny what another has said is true, and what is most precious to that person, is to arouse that one’s anger to the utmost. Those who deny that Jesus is the Christ stand implacably against God’s highest and most glorious revelation to the world.
