Comments
From the day when the hearing of the word of God was mixed with faith, his word entered our hearts and made its home there. We make the word of God welcome in our hearts by cooperating with it and responding promptly to its directions. Although God is stronger than us, if we fight against his word he will withdraw from us, for we grieve his Spirit and he will not overcome us by force. If the promptings of the word are not welcome to us then it is clear that we do not have the love of God in our hearts, for his word is the great treasure of those who truly know him. Those who do not treasure the word are allowed to prevail against the Lord in driving his word from their hearts. To welcome God’s word into our hearts is to stay in the closest possible fellowship with the Son of God, and therefore with the Father also.
Application
Though the Christian falls into sin and is deeply ashamed, if he repents and comes to God again for pardon, he will be restored to fellowship with God. He will not cause God’s word to be driven from his heart because in conformity with the word he has confessed his sins to God.
