It is John’s protective instincts as an apostle and a pastor that have caused him to write this letter. One major use which the Lord’s people should make of it is to guard against the ceaseless efforts of those who try to lead them astray, who teach error about the person of Christ, the nature of his atoning work, the character of a true believer, and the life which God calls every believer to live. If they could, they would deprive God’s children of the promise of eternal life, but this is not possible. The doctrines of Scripture are like safety barriers which cannot be ignored without extreme danger.
Application
Every pastor has received a high calling to guard against error and faithfully warn the church of God, for he is a watchman appointed for their protection.
Let us highly esteem those who are faithful to the truth and warn us of error, but let us personally test all things by the word of God, for each one is responsible for his own soul.
