In spite of the tireless activity of the seducers, God’s children are secure, kept safe by the anointing or unction which they received at the new birth. John is confident because God’s plan of salvation places no reliance on frail and changeable men and women, but on the Spirit, and this fills John with optimism.
Any pastor would despair if he thought he must protect the flock by his own efforts alone. Instead while doing his part, his confidence rests on God’s promise not to let one of his children be lost.
If believers do not need any man to teach them, why has Christ given apostles, pastors and teachers to the church? John says this to highlight the inestimable gift already given to every believer. Without this gift, no human teacher would be able to convince us of the truth of Scripture, for only God can persuade the soul of his truth. Nevertheless every appointed teacher takes advantage of this anointing to instruct God’s people so that they all grow in knowledge through the study of the Bible.
