With great affection and with a sense of the inestimable value of each true child of God, John sums up his exhortation. It is a light burden that he lays on them when he says, ‘abide in him’, for they have only to cooperate with the divine purpose and take advantage of the anointing already given to them. The return of Christ should be much on the thoughts of all because, even though only the last generation will be living on earth when he comes, all who have ever lived will be summoned into his presence. Christ’s coming will mark the end of spiritual darkness, and therefore the end of any further opportunity for men to hide their guilt. The unbeliever knows instinctively that his sins are not forgiven and his conscience will not let him be confident at Christ’s appearing, but those that abide in Christ come confidently with a conscience washed in his blood; they remain connected to the life-giving Vine.
