Following the test comes the claim, in this case another unjustified claim. What God joins together man must not separate, and although justification is by faith alone, faith and obedience are always united. God will not allow any to know him unless they are becoming like him, and our awareness that we do not obey him prevents us drawing near to him. Again, those who claim otherwise lie to themselves and to others.
Application
Discernment looks beyond a person’s words and considers their lives also. Every believer has the right and the duty to exercise discernment as long as they use Scriptural tests. The discerning believer is protected from error.
